OPUS Programme in Sydney - happy memories for one South American student

Diana_Guiterrez_HurtadoOur OPUS feature for August comes from Sydney, Australia, where one of our Work and Study students can reflect fondly on working life down under.

Diana Guiterrez Hurtado (pictured right), aged 23 from Colombia, has been working for Speedo, the world’s top-selling swimwear brand. In her role as a retail assistant in Sydney, Diana has helped customers find the right items for their needs, while simultaneously improving both her English and customer service skills.

She had the following to say of her experience: “I have really enjoyed the OPUS programme, because I have earned money and at the same time practised my English. Speedo is a very important brand, and the shopping centre where I work is very nice. My colleagues are a great team - we all help each other and I have made friends at work. The placement has taught me to be responsible and disciplined, and for me it is very important that I have been able to earn my own money. I am really grateful for this incredible experience abroad!”

Internship Programme in London - invaluable experience for two European students

This month we report on two Kaplan Aspect interns working in London. Though based in contrasting industries, both are discovering the benefits of combining study with employment.

Italian student Raffaele Mogioni (pictured below left) is presently studying for the Chartered Management Institute Diploma, specialising in marketing. Key to his course is relevant professional experience, and Raffaele has been working in the marketing department of customised sportswear retailer Narciss Ltd. His tasks include operating the client database, searching out new clients and managing incoming customer requests and queries. Raffaele is really enjoying his placement, and can apply what he has learned when writing his marketing assignment that forms the final part of his CMI course.

Meanwhile, Swiss student Andrea Christina Stöcklin (below right), aged 20, was interested in a teaching career and wished to gain hands-on experience in a UK school. With the help of Kaplan Aspect, she gained a placement at the International Community School. Based in Regents Park, central London, the independent school provides a learning community for 3-18 year-olds of 56 nationalities. As a teaching assistant, Andrea helped teachers conduct classes, assisted students in tutorials and led classroom discussions. “Working with students of different ages, nationalities and cultures has truly broadened my horizons” says Andrea. “I learned a lot and have now gained teaching experience which will stand me in good stead for my future career. I have really enjoyed my time in London!”
