Pre-Sessional Study Skills Program

Prepare for Bournemouth University with Kaplan Aspect

• Improve your English language ability and study skills in preparation for undergraduate or postgraduate study at Bournemouth University (BU)

Programme structure:

Each week, students will undertake the following:

General English (20 x 45-minute lessons)
Our experienced teachers will focus study on the four main language disciplines: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students' fluency and confidence will increase rapidly thanks to Kaplan Aspect's proven communicative method.

Academic English and Study Skills (8 x 45-minute lessons)
You will work with our expert teachers to develop the following:

• Academic writing styles (including referencing and techniques on how to avoid plagiarism)
• Research skills
• Critical reading techniques
• Seminar leadership and participation
• Listening and note-taking skills

A variety of teaching techniques and materials will be used in class. Students are expected to play an active role in lessons. There will be emphasis on working in groups and pairs. Progress in writing will be carefully monitored through the use of the Kaplan Aspect Academic Portfolio. Writing will be taught as a process with emphasis on redrafting and editing.

Structured Study (8 x 45-minute sessions)
Each student will have a personalised structured study plan with sessions designed to give students access to a wide range of learning materials. These include online and offline language exercises, course books and interactive computer programmes, which allow students to focus on the areas where they need most support. There will also be a weekly lecture on academic and cultural topics. Students work at their own pace and manage their own study time with the guidance of a Structured Study Advisor. 

Teaching Centre

Kaplan Aspect Bournemouth is the largest Kaplan Aspect school in Europe with at least 300 students year-round. It is conveniently located only 2km from the BU campus with direct bus services connecting the two sites. The school offers an impressive range of facilities including lecture rooms, 20 seminar rooms, two multimedia and computer study centres, a Structured Study room, a student common room and outdoor patio area. There is wireless internet access throughout the school building and many students choose to bring their own laptop.

Social program

Kaplan Aspect runs a varied social program. Activities may include sports, film nights, city tours and evenings out.
